Port of Virginia Debuts Expanded Rail Yard

The Port of Virginia on Aug. 6 celebrated completing a $83 million project to expand the central rail yard at Norfolk International Terminals (NIT). The yard, now officially open, will give the port an additional 455,000 TEUs of annual on-dock rail capacity, an increase of 31% port-wide to 2 million TEUs.

NS, ATDA Initiate C3RS Pilot Program

Norfolk Southern (NS) and the American Train Dispatchers Association (ATDA), in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), announced Aug. 6 their joint participation in the Confidential Close Call Reporting System (C3RS) pilot program, which is designed to “enhance communication and transparency to help improve railroad safety.”

Amtrak is seeking four CRISI grants: $13.4 million to replace catenary between North Brunswick and Newark; $18.6 million to upgrade signal systems between New Brunswick and Elizabeth; $80.277 million to replace electrical substation 41 in Kearny; and $187.5 million to replace the Sawtooth Bridges in Kearny (pictured), according to NJ.com.
