Nomad: WiFi a staple for Netherlands rail passengers

Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

More than 100 OBIS trains on run by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Netherlands Railways, or NS) are now equipped with onboard WiFi capabilities, according to Nomad Digital.

nomad_logo.jpgNS launched the service less than a year ago, after signing a five-year contract with Nomad Digital that also provides real time travel information, presented via a variety of passenger information screens, both on the train and trackside.

Plans are to equip all 365 intercity trains in the NS fleet. The rollout encompasses three fleet segments, and is scheduled for completion in December 2013, Normad says.

“The IP connection to the NS trains has transformed the fleet into one of the most sophisticated in the world", commented Nomad Digital Chairman Nigel Wallbridge. "Passengers can take advantage of the Internet and also benefit from the live passenger information updates. The operational benefits are also starting to kick in for the train operator. We are proud to have passed the ‘100 trains’ milestone."
