RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conductors are train service employees, responsible for collecting fares and ensuring that customers have a safe and comfortable ride. Their major duties include: 1) registering on-time for duty; 2) making clear announcements and answering customers questions in a helpful and friendly manner; 3) climbing onto and preparing trains for service; 4) computing fares, selling tickets, making change and preparing and submitting cash reports accurately and on time; 5) enforcing train safety rules and working safely; 6) operating doors at station stops as well as assisting customers on and off trains; 7) responding to medical emergencies, equipment breakdowns, and evacuating customers in emergencies; and 8) assisting with yard switching duties and assisting in making up trains in all weather conditions.

Conductors have the responsibility of supervising others. Critical thinking, excellent communications and organization skills are required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•    Metro-North employees must complete at least one year of service in their current position/craft in order to be eligible to apply and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, plus on-the-job training, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.) in order to be eligible to apply for transfer(s).
•    External applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the areas of customer service and/or cash handling.
•    Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
•    Must be able to work various days, shifts and locations.
•    Must be available to be on call for assignments.
•    Must be able to read and speak English fluently; and possess excellent communication skills.
•    Must be able to perform simple mental arithmetic quickly and accurately.
•    Must be able to climb onto a railroad car or station platform from ground level.
•    Ability to stand and maintain balance on moving trains is required.
•    Pushing and pulling ability required to operate switches.
•    Color vision required to read and interpret signal indications.
•    Talking and hearing ability required to communicate with passengers and train crew.
•    Applicants should be able to read and understand operating and safety rules, exercise independent judgment; analyze problems; and be able to take corrective actions.
•    You should also enjoy dealing with the general public.
•    While having a driver’s license is not required as a condition of employment, those with driver’s licenses will be monitored for compliance as per Federal regulations.
•    Must successfully complete the training program and probationary period. Failure to do so may result in termination.

RATE OF PAY:
The starting rate of pay will be $25.78/hour, which is seventy (70%) percent of the full rate of $36.83/hour, pursuant to the current labor contract. A five (5) year step-rate schedule will be followed until the full rate of pay is reached. The wage progression scale is as follows: 70>75>80>85>90>100%. Credit will be given for previous train service experience based on months of experience accumulated.

SENIORITY:
Seniority accrued in ACRE, the union representing Conductors, will be established as of the date a new employee begins a pre-service training program. New employees with prior railroad Conductor experience will be placed on the ACRE seniority roster behind transferees in order of their prior railroad service. Employees without Metro-North or any other railroad Conductor experience will be placed on the roster in chronological order according to their birth dates.

ASSIGNMENTS:
The job openings may be Extra List positions. Those on the Extra List are on call 24 hours per day, five days per week. Assignments can be to any location on the company’s lines, and the hours can be irregular.

PROMOTIONAL PATH:
Possible areas of advancement include Locomotive Engineer, Rail Traffic Controller, Yardmaster, Operations Manager, etc.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
To be selected for a position, an applicant must:  (1) meet the minimum requirements in the job posting, (2) pass a written examination (if applicable), (3) satisfy a background investigation (which includes credit, if applicable), and (4) pass an oral interview, during which the interviewers will further evaluate the applicant’s qualifications for the position. Because the selection process is competitive, not all qualified applicants are granted an interview.  Metro-North may also require the applicant to undergo a physical ability test, and, if the Company extends a conditional offer, may require him or her to undergo a medical examination, which may include toxicological testing.
