MBTA implements quiet car program
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefSome Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority regional rail riders Monday were able to access “quiet cars” under MBTA’s newly instituted program.
MBTA, following the lead of other regional rail operators such as New Jersey Transit, has designated certain cars off-limits to cell phones, electronic noise, and even loud conversations in order to offer passengers a choice of environments.
MBTA designated the passenger car closest to the locomotive as the quiet car Monday on its Fitchburg and Franklin lines, running northwest and southwest of Boston, respectively. MBTA General Manager Richard Davey says MBTA will test the concept for 90 days, and may expand the program to all its lines if the test proves successful.
