Maintenance of Way Specialist, Steam Into History

Steam Into History (steamintohistory.com) is York County’s First Tourist Railroad located in New Freedom, PA.  We are seeking a Maintenance of Way Specialist.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:


This position will report to the COO.  The maintenance of way specialist is responsible for all aspects of the railroad’s track and structures such as the inspection, planning, maintenance and construction.  All work done must be in accordance to the budget and in compliance with all federal, state and local laws.  This position is accountable for safe work and operating practices, thorough knowledge of the General Code of Operating Rules, AREMA Standards and compliance of all FRA Guidelines.

 

This position does not work a standard forty hour work week.  This position may work on weekends and holidays.  Due to the nature of our small start-up company, you may be responsible for non-traditional mechanical/maintenance duties.  All of our employees must work as a team and do whatever it takes to get the job done!

 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Responsible for safety of all individuals in this department.  Recommends safety-related improvements and work-related improvements in work practices or equipment to COO.  Performs safety conversations to individuals in department as appropriate.  Investigates and documents all safety related incidents in this department or as directed by COO.
  • Performs all work required in the repair, maintenance and servicing of track and structures for the efficient operation of the railroad.
  • Perform inspection and maintenance planning for all bridges, culverts, buildings, scales and other fixed facilities, as well as track inspections, in compliance with FRA, PUC and OSHA regulations.  Investigates and reports on causes of irregularities and failures of track and facilities, and makes necessary repairs.
  • Provides estimates of materials, costs, and timelines for service and repair activities.
  • Purchases necessary materials and supplies to accomplish repairs with prior approval.
  • Maintains inventory required to provide continuous operaton of track and structures.  Order material needed in advance for maintenance and construction projects based on budget.
  • Prioritize work, establishes deadlines and modifies work schedule to meet deadlines.
  • Maintain yard facilities in adherence to federal safety and Company regulations.
  • Coorindinates with COO when an outside contractor will be used for large repairs and then inspects the contractors work.
  • Supervises and trains temporary MOW employees/volunteers and inspects their work.
  • Required to travel to all derailments and train breakdowns to repair track/structures or assist in cleanup.
  • Notifies proper authorities and prepares reports to explain accidents/injuries.
  • Communication with management, customer service, customers, actors/volunteers and outside contractors.
  • Assist in non-traditional mechanical/maintenance duties, as required, such as taking tickets, assisting passengers on the train, etc.

 

SKILLS and POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must speak, read and understand English because you will be asked to follow posted bulletins, regulations, rule books, etc.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Performs skilled work on railroad track and structures to federal, state and local standards.
  • Ability to perform inspections on railroad track and structures to FRA standards.
  • Ability to operate necessary railroad track equipment and tools.
  • Ability to read blue prints and do layout work.
  • Ability to perform welding repairs on all equipment to AAR standards.
  • Maintains a current library of equipment maintenance manuals, schematics and lock-out procedures.
  • Ensures equipment is equipped with log books, operating manuals and lock-out procedures and any other federally regulated material.
  • Identify warranty issues and follow-up with manufacturer.
  • Ability to follow proper safety and housekeeping procedures pertaining to the work area. 
  • Must be able to successfully and routinely pass operating rules examinations.
  • Must be able to make logical choices and/or drawing logical conclusions.
  • Must be able to judge speed/distance of objects/moving parts.
  • Must be able to take action and/or make decisions affecting the security/well being of others.
  • Ability to work irregular hours and in various weather conditions.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED required.
  • A valid Certified Steam Locomotive Engineer license preferred.
  • Must have a diesel or heavy equipment repair background.
  • Knowledge of General Code of Operating Rules, AREMA Standards and FRA Guidelines.
  • Preferred Experience:  Five years prior railroad track and structures experience.
  • Computer proficiency required (MS Office Software).

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


The position will work outside. Exposed to exhaust fumes, gasoline, diesel fuel, odors, dust,

dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment and conditions.  You

must be able to perform heavy physical labor. You must have strong vision and hearing including the

ability to see and read hand signals from near and far, distinguish between colors, visually judge the

speed and distance of moving objects, see at night and recognize changes in sounds.  You must be

physically strong, able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds occasionally and 100 pounds infrequently.  You will need good balance to regularly step on and off equipment and work from ladders to perform various tasks.  You must be able to walk, sit, stand and bend comfortably.  Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom comfortably.

 

You will be working outdoors in all weather conditions – including ice, rain, snow, cold and heat

and frequently at elevations more than 12 feet above ground.  Ability to work long hours and flexible days,

including weekends, and 24-hour on-call status are essential job requirements.  Must comply with all work

rules including those pertaining to safety and health.
