GWI December and 4Q traffic gain
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefGreenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming, Inc. (GWI) Thursday said its freight carload traffic in December was up 29.6% over the year-ago period, while its fourth-quarter traffic for 2010 was up 19.4% over the fourth quarter of 2009.
Farm & Food Products registered the largest gain, up 49.3%, in December, though GWI attributed the increase to its coal & coke traffic, up 21.3%. Autos & Auto Parts led declining commodities, down 16.3%.
GWI said that excluding 7,488 carloads from the FreightLink acquisition in Australia, which closed Dec. 1, 2010, same-railroad traffic for the month still notched a gain of 17.6% over Dec. 2009 levels.
Similarly, excluding the FreightLink acquisition from fourth-quarter results, same-railroad traffic rose 15.4% over the comparable quarter in 2009.
