Genesee & Wyoming traffic up in September, 3Q
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefGreenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming, Inc. said Thursday its September carload traffic rose 13.3% compared with the same month a year ago, while its third-quarter carload traffic also rose, up 15.1%, compared with the third quarter of 2010.
Excluding 7,147 carloads from the company’s FreightLink acquisition, which closed December 1, 2010, and 1,176 carloads from the Arizona Eastern Railway (AZER) acquisition, which closed September 1, 2011, same-railroad traffic in September 2011 still gained 2.% over September 2010, GWI said. The increase was attributed primarily to a 1,864 carload increase in coal & coke traffic , mostly from GWI’s Illinois Region.
Similarly, excluding 21,635 carloads from the acquisition of both FreightLink and AZER, same-railroad traffic for the third quarter of 2011 was up 4.9%, with quarterly gains attributed to traffic increases in farm & food products, coal & coke, and minerals & stone.
