Fort Lauderdale still ponders streetcar option

Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., continues to consider either light rail transit or streetcar options for a 2.7-mile route, but is concerned federal funds to support its effort won’t be forthcoming.

The city’s Downtown Development Authority has been told earmarks for such a line are unlikely given the opposition in the new Congress to inserting spending items into the budget to benefit individual members.

But supporters still believe “The Wave” can receive a favorable response from the Federal Transit Administration, which could rate the project’s viability, thus qualifying it for FTA funding.

The line is expected to cost roughly $135 million to construct, and would include 10 stations.
