For sale: 10,000 AIG Rail Services cars

American International Group, under government control since its taxpayer bailout, plans to auction Chicago-based subsidiary AIG Rail Services’ fleet of 10,000 freight cars, which have an estimated  net asset value of approximately $600 million, along with their leases.

Financial sources confirmed press reports over the weekend that its freight car business is among the noncore assets that AIG is unloading to help finance its restructuring, The company is looking for a buyer not currently in the car-leasing business.
