Director, Track Construction


Summary of Duties

Reporting directly to the Senior Director, Engineering Maintenance, plans, directs and controls Metra’s Engineering track related capital projects and monitors district track maintenance to ensure the safe movement of trains/equipment and compliance with all Metra’s Engineering policies. Coordinates the utilization of Maintenance of Way work equipment between Metra districts and other Metra carriers.

Responsible for the purchasing and oversight of capital track material. Responsible for the training of new Roadmasters, Track Inspectors, Foremen and current employees. Oversees the preparation of plans, and estimates, and directs staff to ensure that projects are effectively and efficiently executed. This position is a first responder to all major disasters, derailments and weather related emergency conditions. This position requires flexible availability including non-business hours, weekends, and holidays and is subject to call 24/7. Performs other related duties as needed to meet the on-going needs of the organization.


Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Must have experience as a Track Foreman, Track Inspector or Roadmaster in a high-speed mainline territory.
  • In addition to qualification #1, must have significant experience working in and supervising all types of projection gangs such as rail, tie, surfacing and undercutting.
  • Must possess significant knowledge of FRA Track Standards and Maintenance of Way construction and maintenance standards.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Strong and effective oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with all levels of staff, and/or other external groups and organizations.
  • Must be able to work with sensitive information while maintaining strict confidentiality and be a self-starter.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
