U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-Pa.) has been appointed to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for the remainder of the 118th Congress, following the death of Rep. Donald M. Payne Jr. (D-N.J).
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries selected Deluzio to fill the vacancy on the committee, which has jurisdiction over all modes of transportation and is responsible for program authorization and oversight of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Additionally, it has jurisdiction over the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, most types of water infrastructure, the nation’s emergency preparedness and response programs, federal economic development agencies, the Coast Guard, and federal buildings.
Deluzio was elected in 2022 and is serving his first term in Congress representing Pennsylvania’s 17th district, which includes all of Beaver County and parts of Allegheny County. He received a Bachelor of Science degree with merit from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, and following his graduation was commissioned as an active-duty surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy. His military service included three deployments, including a tour of duty with U.S. Army Civil Affairs in Iraq.
After returning from Iraq, Deluzio earned his law degree magna cum laude from Georgetown Law and clerked for a federal judge. He went on to work at the Brennan Center for Justice on the Voting Rights and Election Security teams, and later worked at Pitt Cyber, where he focused on voting rights, election security, and the intersection of technology and civil rights. He was part of the Pitt Faculty Organizing Committee with the United Steelworkers.
Deluzio, who is the House lead sponsor of the bipartisan Railway Safety Act, serves as the Vice Senior Democrat on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and sits on the Subcommittee on Health and the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs. He also serves on the House Armed Services Committee, sitting on the Subcommittee on Sea Power and Projection Forces, as well as the Subcommittee on Cyber, Information Technology, and Innovation.
“I want to thank Leader Jeffries for appointing me to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee,” said Congressman Chris Deluzio during the June 4 announcement. He noted that committee membership “provides me more opportunities to fight not only for rail safety, but also for major Western Pennsylvania priorities like better passenger rail, stronger and more resilient infrastructure like water and flood management systems, airports, highways, bridges, public transit, locks and dams, and more.”
“Chris is a leader who gets things done and a champion for the hardworking people of Western Pennsylvania,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said. “I look forward to working together as we continue to rebuild our crumbling roads, bridges, tunnels, airports and rail systems while creating good-paying union jobs at the same time.”
