Delaware gets funds for rail service study
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefThe Federal Railroad Administration said it has awarded the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) $450,000 to conduct studies for potential rail service between the Northeast Corridor through the First State and toward Maryland’s Delmarva Peninsula region.
Funding for the studies comes from FRA’s High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program (HSIPR), and requires a $450,000 match by DelDOT. The initial study will be on the feasibility of a new passenger rail line extending south from Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor at or near Wilmington, Del., to Dover, the state capital and Delaware’s second-largest city, and eventually further south.
Based on the results of this study, environmental analysis, a service development plan, and preliminary design would follow.
