Chief Safety Officer, Amtrak

The Chief Safety Officer (CSO) is a senior leadership position responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the operations of the System Safety Department and coordinating safety activities and standards of Amtrak departments, including Amtrak’s interface with outside agencies. Among other activities, the System Safety Department works to ensure that Amtrak undertakes efforts to achieve continuous improvement in employee and passenger safety, works to instill a safety-driven culture within Amtrak, and remains compliant with all applicable safety regulations and standards. The CSO has four to eight direct reports and provides functional leadership to all safety personnel within Amtrak.
The ideal candidate must be able to provide leadership to overall safety efforts at Amtrak, interacting with and influencing all levels of management from the Executive Committee to the front-line supervisor, and working with the leadership of labor unions. The candidate should have experience in developing and delivering a corporate safety program and proactively addressing safety issues within a private or public company with complex field operations. The candidate must be capable of organizing work flows, responding to time-sensitive situations, and organizing and motivating staff. The candidate must be able to be assertive within the organization to drive changes when necessary. The candidate must be able to work within any operating area of the company to improve safety performance and ensure that Amtrak meets critical mandates.
A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Operations Management, Business Administration, Engineering, Transportation or equivalent is required. Prefer Masters degree in related field. [Read more about this exciting position on Amtrak’s website.]
