CapMetro appoints VP of Rail Operations

Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

Austin, Tex.’s Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority has appointed Melvin Clark vice president of rail operations, beginning Jan. 31. Clark currently serves as district rail director for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transportation Authority.

Clark will oversee the management and safety of all passenger and freight rail operations, as well as maintenance of way, including track, bridges, signals, and crossings, and compliance with all Federal Railroad Administration regulations.

The 32-mile system, running from downtown Austin to Leander, Tex., suffered several delays prior to commencing service, many triggered by a running dispute with the FRA over compliance with (and interpretation of) safety regulations.

“The hiring of Melvin Clark is consistent with my goal of raising the bar and transforming Capital Metro into the highly-respected and valued service that I know we can be for our community,” said President and CEO Linda S. Watson. “His nationwide rail experience and expertise will ensure that we adhere to the highest level of safety and customer service delivery for our current and future MetroRail and freight services.”
