Ansaldo wins Stockholm CBTC contract
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefAnsaldo STS said Monday subsidiary Ansaldo STS Sweden AB has won an 80 million euro ($111.3 million) contract from Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (Greater Stockholm Public Transport) for resignaling the Stockholm Underground.
The contract includes a total replacement of the existing signaling system on the Red Line (41 kilometers, 36 stations), as well as all onboard systems (30 trains) for the line, but can be extended to cover also additional lines and trains. The new signaling system employs state-of-the-art CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) technologies, developed by Ansaldo STS, to provide more efficient, reliable and comfortable train operation, with a minimum amount of equipment on the track.
Ansaldo says there also is an option to migrate to full driverless operation in the future. A key prerequisite is that the project, due to be completed in 2014, shall be conducted without interrupting normal daily services on the line. A further undertaking is the maintenance of the system, which is included in the contract as an option for up to 25 years.
