Amtrak to reopen Wilmington Station

Representatives from Amtrak, the State of Delaware, City of Wilmington, the First State’s congressional delegation, and Friends of Furness Railroad District will gather on March 19 to reopen Amtrak’s Wilmington Station, which will | dedicated as the Joseph R. Biden, Jr., Railroad Station, honoring the current Vice President who served as a U.S. senator for 36 years.

amtrak_logo.jpgThe $37.7 million renovation project has lasted two years; the station now offers a larger concourse, safety improvements, and a new passenger information display system. In addition, the renovation includes enhancements to the station’s accessibility for people with disabilities.

Funding for the renovation came from Amtrak ($5.7 million), the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ($20 million), the Delaware Department of Transportation ($2 million), and $10 million in federal SAFETEA-LU and appropriations funding.

Wilmington Station, on the Northeast Corridor, is the 12th busiest station in the Amtrak system. Wilmington Station also serves SEPTA and the Delaware Transit Corp.
