Massachusetts: No Green Line PTC for now
Written by Douglas John BowenCiting cost concerns, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has deferred any installation of Positive Train Control (PTC) on Boston's Green Line light rail transit operation, saying lower-cost alternatives are available.
MBTA also says the Green Line’s safety record is a good one, despite incidents such as low-speed LRT collisions, including one last month, that have occurred.
“When you look at the national average around the country for light rail or trolley systems, the line is below the national average in the number of incidents and accidents that occur,” MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said to local media.
MBTA says it will seek lower-cost alternatives.
Early last month MBTA awarded Alstom a contract to modernize 86 articulated LRT vehicles operating on MBTA’s Green Line.
