BNSF 2Q17 revenue up 15%; OR drops to 65

Based on a 24% increase in net income for 2017’s second quarter, BNSF’s 2Q17 revenues increased 15% to $5.25 billion on 9% more revenue units and 5% more RPU (revenue per unit) than the prior-year quarter.

AAR recognizes Road & Rail Services

The Association of American Railroads recently awarded Road & Rail Services Inc. a top Automotive Quality Excellence Award for its efforts at the Talladega, Ala., facility, marking the third time the company has earned this award. Road & Rail was recognized for the “Highest Quality Review Score for Origin Facilities” for the period covering June 2016 to May 2017.

Barbour joins HNTB

Michael Barbour, PE, has joined HNTB Corp.’s Southern California team as Senior Project Director and Associate Vice President, with responsibility for the California High-Speed Rail Construction Package 4 project, where he oversees project and construction management of technical and management staff.

Amtrak, MBTA bury the hatchet

Amtrak and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) have ended their battle over operation, maintenance and use of the 37.9-mile Attleboro Line between Boston and the Rhode Island state line on the Northeast Corridor. The two parties have struck a new Attleboro Line Agreement under which Amtrak will provide maintenance-of-way and dispatching services through 2021.

MTA New York City Transit is qualifying the TRANSIS®-Train communications system from CSiT, a supplier of integrated communication and security technology for transit, under a loan agreement. TRANSIS®-Train is powered by TRACe™ transportation computing technology from Kontron, a provider of ECT (Embedded Computing Technology).

Frauscher sets RI 2017 agenda

Frauscher Sensor Technology USA Inc. will be exhibiting its Frauscher Tracking Solutions (FTS) at Railway Interchange 2017 at booth 1801, where visitors “can learn more about inductive wheel sensors, reliable axle counters, and see the future of train tracking with solutions based on Fiber Optic Acoustic Detection (FOAD) technology,” the company says.

STB sets 2016 cost of capital

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board has issued a decision determining the railroad industry’s cost of capital for 2016. In Railroad Cost of Capital—2016, Docket No. EP 558 (Sub-No. 20), the Board found that the rail industry’s after-tax cost of capital was 8.88% for 2016. For 2015, the cost of capital was 9.61%.
