RSSI PTC forum: Interoperability the final hurdle

OMAHA, MAY 21, RSSI PTC SEMINAR – U.S. Class I railroads have made significant progress implementing Positive Train Control, to the extent that all the requirements for the Dec. 31, 2018 interim deadline will be met, making them eligible to apply, if needed, for an extension to Dec. 31, 2020 to complete their systems.

NS joins BiTA

Add Norfolk Southern to the growing list of railroads that have joined the Blockchain in Transport Alliance. BiTA, founded in August 2017, is described as “the transportation and logistics industry’s leading trade association for developing standards and education in blockchain technologies, a field focused on the peer-to-peer recording of transactions through use of cryptography and distributed ledgers.”

$25.8 million for TOD: FTA

The Federal Transit Administration has made available $25.8 million in competitive grant funds to support TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) projects.

KCS: Adamiak promoted to new post

Kansas City Southern on May 24 promoted Vice President Energy and Short Line Relations Ginger L. Adamiak to Vice President Energy, Industrial Development and Commercial Innovation, a new position. She reports to Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Brian D. Hancock.

NSC lands CN grain hopper order

CN has ordered 1,000 high-cube grain hopper cars from National Steel Car, Hamilton, Ont., to replace aging equipment and accommodate increasing annual Western Canadian crop yields. The order closely follows the Canadian government’s passing of Bill C-49, the Transportation Modernization Act.

MTA New York City Transit President Andy Byford on May 23 revealed “Fast Forward: The Plan to Modernize NYCT,” an estimated $19 billion* program described as “a comprehensive plan to completely modernize every major aspect of the organization and its services, from subways to buses to accessibility to corporate culture.”

NRLC arbitration board issues health care ruling

A National Railway Labor Conference arbitration board ruled May 23 that the pattern health care terms adopted by the freight railroads and nine of the unions in national bargaining should also apply to the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes (BMWE) and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation (SMART) – Mechanical Division.
