FRA offering more PTC grants

The Federal Railroad Administration is making available the remaining $46.3 million of $250 million in Positive Train Control (PTC) Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program grant money. FRA on Sept. 12 issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), to solicit applications.

Will NS leave Norfolk?

There has been some speculation that Norfolk Southern will pull up stakes in Norfolk, Va., and relocate its corporate headquarters to Atlanta, Ga., where the railroad’s operations and engineering forces have been historically located.

Perri promoted at PHL

Pacific Harbor Line (PHL), an Anacostia & Pacific switching and terminal railroad, has promoted Stephane Perri to General Superintendent. He will be directing all transportation operations in his new role.

NYCT: A new station rises from the ruins

Seventeen years after MTA New York City Transit’s Cortlandt Street Station on the No. 1 subway line was destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, a new station has opened to take its place.

Moore named LRW Woman of the Year

The League of Railway Women (LRW) has named Ontario Northland President and CEO Corina Moore its 2018 Outstanding Woman of the Year award. The annual award is presented to a woman in the rail industry “who demonstrates vision, initiative, creativity and guidance in a leadership role within her professional railway field; is innovative, a problem-solver and overcomes challenges; and brings consistent excellence to her organization and surrounding community,” LRW said in announcing Moore’s award.

Leadership changes at MRL

After 31 years of service, Montana Rail Link President Tom Walsh is retiring, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Vice President Operations Stacy Posey will succeed Walsh.

PTC Political Circus, Act (fill in the blank)

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Railroad Subcommittee has scheduled yet another pointless, time-consuming “status review” hearing on PTC. The people actually doing the implementation work—railroads, suppliers, consultants, FRA—get to spend another day getting peppered with pointless questions from clueless politicians who obviously don’t bother reading reports or doing basic research, and delight in wasting valuable people’s valuable time to prop up their huge egos and give the appearance of actually doing something useful.

For UP, 1,000 (or more) new reefers

Union Pacific will be acquiring 1,000 new high-tech refrigerated boxcars and may increase that number to 1,600, if needed, according to UP Vice President and General Manager Agricultural Products Marketing Brad Thrasher.

WMATA’s new safety watchdog

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has outlined the process by which primary responsibility for federal safety oversight of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail rapid transit system will transfer from FTA to the Metrorail Safety Commission (MSC).
