BNSF, CSX launch LA-Ohio intermodal service

BNSF and CSX will launch a container-only direct-rail domestic and international intermodal service between Los Angeles and CSX’s Northwest Ohio Intermodal Terminal in North Baltimore, Ohio, on Oct. 29, 2018. The new service will run eastbound and westbound with departure offerings five days per week in each direction.

MTA names Warren safety chief

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has named Patrick T. Warren as Chief Safety Officer, overseeing all safety management policy implementation. He will work closely with MTA agencies as they “continue to improve work practices and invest in new technology and equipment,” MTA said.

Intermodal leads weekly, year-to-date gains

U.S. intermodal traffic realized gains of 5.7% and 6%, respectively, for the week ending Sept. 22, 2018 and 2018’s first 38 weeks, compared to the prior-year periods, the Association of American Railroads reported.

RailWorks acquiring NARSTCO

Track construction and maintenance services provider RailWorks Corp. has finalized an agreement to acquire NARSTCO, a manufacturer of steel crossties and turnout crosstie sets.

MTA taps Troup for ESA

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has appointed veteran railway engineering professional Arthur R. “Rob” Troup as Senior Program Executive of the MTA Long Island Rail Road East Side Access (ESA) project. MTA Chief Development Officer Janno Lieber announced Troup’s appointment on Sept. 24.

A flood of controversy is swirling around CSX following media reports blaming the railroad for catastrophic flooding in Lumberton, N.C., during Hurricane Florence, which inundated much of the state’s low-lying coastal areas.

Metro-North first with ISO-50001

MTA Metro-North Railroad is the first North American to receive ISO-50001 Certification, described as “an internationally recognized framework that guides and supports organizations to manage energy more efficiently.” The certification puts Metro-North “on a path to save $2 million annually by 2020 and further reduce its carbon footprint.”

Aurizon taps Trimble for analytics

Aurizon, Australia’s largest rail freight operator, has contracted with Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Trimble Rail Solutions for the company’s R2M remote diagnostic and P2M planning and performance management systems.

Knapp joins STV

Veteran civil engineer William Knapp, P.E., has joined STV as Vice President and Design-Build Director, Western Region. He will be based in STV’s Oakland, Calif. office and manage design-build efforts in the western half of the U.S. for the firm’s Transportation & Infrastructure Division.

STB to UP: Keep us informed

Union Pacific’s plan to implement Precision Scheduled Railroading caught the attention of the Surface Transportation Board, which on Sept. 20 sent a letter signed by Chairman Ann Begeman and Vice Chairman Deb Miller to UP chief executive Lance Fritz requesting that the railroad’s senior management engage in weekly calls with the Board’s Rail Customer and Public Assistance office during the implementation process. The purpose of the calls is “to keep the agency fully informed of UP’s operating changes and impacts to customers and others.”
