Transport Canada: Normalized steel TIH requirement, consistent with U.S.

Railroad tank cars transporting TIH (toxic inhalation hazard) substances in Canada will be required to have heads and shells constructed of normalized steel under updated Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations established by Transport Canada. The new rules, which take effect July 2, 2021, are consistent with updated U.S. regulations. Normalized steel undergoes heat treatment that increases its durability and resistance to cracking at low temperatures.

Crunican to FTA: Stop stalling

As she nears retirement, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) General Manager Grace Crunican is renewing a call for action to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to fund its share of the agency’s $3.5 billion Transbay Corridor Core Capacity Program, described as “a package of strategic investments that would boost train frequency between San Francisco and Oakland by more than 30% and overall capacity by 45%.”

Jack L. Stephens, 71

Jack L. Stephens, retired Executive Director of the South Florida Reginal Transportation Authority (SFRTA), died June 2, 2019, of natural causes in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Stephens, 71, retired from SFRTA in December 2018 after having held leadership positions in the public transportation industry for more than 30 years.

LIRC promotes Kramer to VP Transportation

SCOTUS to AAR: No writ of certiorari

In the latest twist of an ongoing saga now in its 11th year, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has denied an Association of American Railroads (AAR) petition for a writ of certiorari* (a request that SCOTUS order a lower court to send up a case record for review) regarding whether Congress may vest a for-profit government corporation—in this case, Amtrak—with regulatory authority over its private-sector “competitors”—Amtrak’s host freight railroads. AAR has been battling with USDOT and Amtrak in court since 2011.

New York MTA launches OMNY pilot

More than 25 years after it began transitioning its fare payment system from traditional metal tokens to the MetroCard, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has launched OMNY, its new contactless smartcard system, with a pilot program on the New York City Transit (NYCT) Lexington Avenue (4-5-6) subway and buses on Staten Island. The public pilot kicked off May 31 at the Bowling Green station in Lower Manhattan.

CP, Yang Ming launch partnership

Canadian Pacific and Taiwan-based Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. have entered into a three-year partnership to connect Yang Ming customers with North America via the Port of Vancouver in British Columbia.
