Railway Age on Dec. 9 announced that its 2022 Railroader of the Year Award goes to two exemplary and visionary North American rail industry leaders: Canadian Pacific President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel, and Kansas City Southern President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick J. Ottensmeyer.

Rivet Counting, Railroad-Style

In model railroading, there’s an annoying practice known as “rivet counting.” It involves people who have nothing better to do than finding fault with what someone else has created closely examining a painstakingly reproduced miniature (pick your scale—G, O, S, HO, N, Z—doesn’t matter) of a particular locomotive or car and finding some minuscule flaw, because the finished model doesn’t reproduce the actual equipment with 200% accuracy.

CSX Christens CCX

CSX’s new Carolina Connector (CCX) intermodal terminal, located northeast of Raleigh, N.C. and described as “one of the most technologically advanced facilities on the CSX network, is now open. CSX says the terminal “will help relieve port and highway congestion by adding rail-to-truck transfer capacity for domestic and international container shipments.”

For Tom Prendergast, a New AECOM Role

AECOM has given Tom Prendergast a new role: New York Metro Executive, Design & Consulting Services business. Prendergast will be responsible for delivering projects across business lines and leading more than 3,000 staff within the states of New York and New Jersey.

GoRail: What IIJA Means for Railroads

On Nov. 15, President Joe Biden signed the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), described by rail advocacy organization GoRail as “a momentous, bipartisan bill for fixing and improving U.S. roads, bridges, waterways, airports and other infrastructure systems, and reauthorizing surface transportation programs for the next five years.”

FRA Renews RSAC Charter

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has renewed the charter of the Railroad Safety Advisory Committee (RSAC) for a two-year period. The renewed charter, or “recharter,” as FRA terms it, increases the number of represented organizations by three, from 23 to 26, and the number of individual voting members by 17, from 34 to 51.

Long Appointed RSI Head

The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) has appointed Patricia Long as its new President. She assumes her role effective Nov. 29. Long and her family reside in the greater Washington D.C. area; she will operate out of RSI headquarters there.

CP: Debt Offerings for CPKC Transaction

In two separate offerings, one in Canada, one in the United States, Canadian Pacific (CP) is issuing several billion dollars in debt to “indirectly fund, in part, the cash consideration required for the acquisition of common and preferred stock of Kansas City Southern (KCS) in connection with the CP-KCS transaction to create Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), North America’s first transnational Class I railroad.

Railhead Lands G&W Video Contract

Genesee & Wyoming, Inc. (G&W) has awarded Railhead Corporation a contract to supply and install its high definition/4K onboard Locomotive Digital Video Recorder (LDVR4K) systems and Twin View and Wedge cameras fleetwide in North America “to support safety initiatives.”
