Saskatchewan Funding 13 Small-Road Infrastructure Projects

The government of Saskatchewan is awarding $530,000 in grants to 13 provincially regulated short lines for track upgrade and expansion, highway/rail grade crossing surface and sightline improvement, bridge maintenance, and other projects.

Amtrak is hosting in-person and virtual hiring events on June 14, and will temporarily suspend some Michigan-to-Chicago Wolverine service. Also, San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) approves a two-year budget, including a fare hike; Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking public input to help shape its long-range transportation plan; New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will introduce blue lighting inside select subway stations; and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANY/NJ) issues a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the AirTrain Newark replacement program.

“Roughly half of U.S. intermodal shipments are related to international trade, so what happens at ports is extremely important to railroads,” said John T. Gray, Senior Vice President of the Association of American Railroads (AAR), which on June 7 released a report on U.S. rail traffic for May 2023 and for the week ending June 3, 2023. “U.S. port volumes, especially on the West Coast, have already been trending down for months and are a major reason why rail intermodal volumes have been on the decline in 2023.”

According to Intramotev, its ReVolt cars remain in the train consist “to capture energy via regenerative braking and reduce locomotives’ diesel consumption,” while its TugVolt cars (pictured)—supplied as a “proprietary kit that can retrofit/upfit existing railcars to become battery-electric”—can decouple from the consist to independently provide first- and last-mile service.

Supply Side: FourKites, Intramotev, Medha/Leclanché

FourKites, a real-time supply chain visibility company, earns a 2023 Gartner Marketing and Communications Award. Also, Intramotev will supply three battery-electric railcars to Iron Senergy for its mining operation in Waynesburg, Pa.; and Medha Group and Leclanché SA agree to jointly market their technologies in the railroad and commercial truck markets.

Unveiled and Approved: Project Connect’s First Phase Alignment (UPDATED June 7)

The Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) on May 23 recommended a 9.8-mile, 15-station light rail alignment as the first phase of Project Connect, based on the expertise of partners ATP, the city of Austin, Tex., and CapMetro as well as community input. On June 6, Austin city leaders approved it.
