CPKC Issues 2023-24 Grain Service Outlook Report

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) on July 31 published its Grain Service Outlook Report, as required by section 151.01(1) of the Canada Transportation Act. It provides an assessment of the newly merged Class I’s ability to move grain during the 2023-24 crop year, taking into account the total volume of grain expected to be hauled.

Intermodal ‘Challenged’ in 2Q23: IANA

For second-quarter 2023, total intermodal volumes dropped 10.4% from the prior-year period, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) Intermodal Quarterly Report. However, “anticipated volume growth” is lifting the 2023 outlook, the association noted.

The Railroad Retirement Board’s (RRB) ability to process retirements and sickness benefits for railroad employees and retirees “living in every state and every congressional district” would be “severely” impacted by the limitation on RRB’s administrative funding included in the fiscal year (FY) 2024 House Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) appropriations bill, the Association of American Railroads (AAR), American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA), and Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD) told Congress in a July 31 letter expressing their opposition.

NTSB: ‘Poor Track Conditions’ Led to 2021 Empire Builder Derailment

A combination of worn rail, vertical track deflection, subgrade instability and track misalignment led to the derailment of Amtrak’s westbound Empire Builder on Sept. 25, 2021, which killed three passengers and injured 49 passengers and crew members, according to the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) final investigation report, released July 27.
