Week 51: U.S. Carloads, Intermodal Register Double-Digit Gains

U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Dec. 23, 2023 (Week 51), came in at 486,787 carloads and intermodal units, rising 24.2% from the same week last year, based on 230,946 carloads—up 23.7% from 2022—and intermodal volume of 255,841 containers and trailers—up 24.7%, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported Dec. 27.

Denver Regional Transit District (RTD) on Jan. 1 will launch systemwide lower fares. Also, AECOM lands a design contract for New Jersey Transit’s New Brunswick commuter rail station; New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (NYMTA) is pre-qualifying vendors for new subway system fare gates; and HNTB earns an award for the MTA Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Jamaica Capacity Improvements (JCI) program, Phase 1–Platform F.

Los Angeles, Calif.-based Parallel Systems on Dec. 20 released a video of its new autonomous battery-electric freight cars, which it said showed them “successfully platooning,” or “connecting with one another through bumper-to-bumper contact,” at its Southern California test track.

Ports of Indiana Taps Rail, Marine Execs to Build Business
