NTSB Issues Preliminary Report on 2024 CSX Head-On Collision

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a preliminary report for its ongoing investigation of the April 15, 2024, head-on collision of a CSX train with a CSX stationary, loaded rock train in Folkston, Ga. The agency said future work will focus on “the industry-wide operational procedures for train movements during a signal suspension, training standards on the manual operation of dual-controlled switches, and the effectiveness of job briefings.”

CN on May 9 reported signing a 20-year lease to relocate its headquarters to 600 De La Gauchetière West in downtown Montréal, Québec, Canada. While the lease begins in 2028, the Canadian Class I said it will start moving certain departments there as of 2026.

AAR: North American Rail Volume Up Through Week 18

Through the first 18 weeks of 2024 (ending May 4), total North American carload and intermodal traffic rose 2.1% from the same point last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported May 8. The U.S., Canada and Mexico all experienced gains.

Twin Cities & Western Railroad, Railway Age’s 2008 Short Line of the Year, is receiving a $328,424 grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to extend the stub track over a recently acquired parcel and to create a full siding with connections to its main line, enabling greater access and track capacity to support a large transload operation. RailState: CN Drives Canadian Intermodal Growth in April

A combined 96,719 containers moved eastbound out of the western Canada ports in April, up 6% from March 2024 and up 56.5% from April 2023, according to real-time network visibility provider RailState, which independently tracks all freight rail movements across Canada. April volumes are the highest has ever recorded by RailState, which was established in 2021.
