For the Flying Yankee, a New Owner (UPDATED 7/29)

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) has selected the winning bidder for the Flying Yankee, the diesel-electric streamliner built in late 1934 by the Budd Company for the Boston & Maine, following a Request For Proposal (RFP) process. The streamliner will soon be headed to its new home.

“Due to higher availability of subway operators, the addition of new Orange Line cars, and steady improvements to track infrastructure, the number of weekday trips delivered each day on the Red, Orange, and Blue … subway lines has increased significantly over the last year,” according to MBTA. The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) and the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Office of Research, Development & Technology have shared the results of an evaluation of all Safety Culture Assessments completed on short line railroads in 2023. Five areas of strength across the railroads and five areas of opportunity were identified.

AAR: North American Rail Volume Up Through Week 29

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) on July 24 reported that total North American carload and intermodal traffic rose 2.3% through the first 29 weeks of this year compared with the prior-year period. The United States, Canada and Mexico all saw gains through the week ending July 20.

CHSRA, CalSTA Renew Environmental Review Agreement With FRA

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) and the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) on July 23 reported renewing an agreement with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to continue assuming the federal agency’s environmental review responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
