Ontario regional council spurns LRT referendum

Ontario province’s Waterloo-Kitchener-Cambridge Regional Council on June 2 voted 7-3 not to reopen the debate on its regional transportation plan via a referendum, despite calls for such a move by some municipal officials, led by Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran.

Ontario business leaders back LRT-based plan

Ontario business leaders have added their voices to an ongoing debate over establishing light rail transit and Bus Rapid Transit outside of Toronto proper—in general voicing strong support for a proposed regional transit plan with LRT at its core.

Atlanta orders four Siemens streetcars

Siemens Industry, Inc. announced Thursday that it will supply Atlanta with four new streetcars under a $17.2 million contract from the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority on behalf of the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District. The first car is to be delivered in September 2012 with revenue service beginning in early 2013—the first streetcars to roll in Atlanta since 1949. The order marks Siemens’ entry inthe U. S. streetcar market.

Fla. HSR funds redistributed; NEC wins share

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on May 9 announced the Obama Administration’s redistribution of roughly $2.02 billion in high speed rail funds, derived from funds originally targeted for Florida’s $2.4 billion HSR project, prior to Gov. Rick Scott’s rejection of the federal package.

California HSR route option reconsidered

The California High-Speed Rail Authority Thursday agreed to reconsider an HSR route between Los Angeles and San Francisco roughly paralleling Interstate 5, closer to the Pacific coast than the Central Valley option, still viable, through the state’s interior.

Oak Cliff streetcar may need DART funding

The Dallas City Council may ask Dallas Area Rapid Transit to contribute roughly $20 million to the proposed $37 million Oak Cliff streetcar project, linking Union Station and Methodist Hospital.

MBTA awards Green Line Extension contract

HDR/Gilbane Team, a joint venture of HDR Engineering, Inc. and Gilbane Building Co., has contracted with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to provide program management and construction management for the Green Line light rail transit extension project. 

Metrolinx orders 12 DMUs for Toronto airport line

Ontario regional transport agency Metrolinx on Friday said it has entered into a C$53 million contract with Sumitomo Corp. of America to supply 12 diesel multiple-units (DMU) trains for the Air Rail Link (ARL) between Toronto’s Union Station and Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Sumitomo will be joined by Nippon Sharyo, Ltd. in the effort.

California seeks funds spurned by Florida

The California High-Speed Rail Authority voted unanimously Wednesday to apply for the $2.38 billion in high speed rail funding that Florida Gov. Rick Scott rejected. The money would permit the extension of extenda starter Central Valley segment of a planned 800-mile system.
