MTA juggles ESA work, LIRR rush-hour schedule

MTA Long Island Rail Road will discontinue three evening rush-hour trains, and adjust the schedule of others, beginning July 9 in order to facilitate ongoing East Side Access (ESA) construction in Long Island City, Queens, N.Y. (Sunnyside Yard).

Port of Stockton hails track connection

California’s Port of Stockton on Monday said it was “pleased to announce the completion of 3,347 feet of new track on the Port’s West Complex .” The port implemented the improvement “in conjunction with its switch carrier railroad Central California Traction Company (CCT).”

Rail employment dips in May, but ahead of 2011

U.S. Class I railroads employed 161,191 workers in mid-May, down 0.42% from the previous month (161,876), but still ahead of March’s 160,523 workers employed, according to data provided by the Surface Transportation Board.

Canadian shippers await promised service law

Canada’s Coalition of Rail Shippers (CRS) issued a statement Monday applauding the Minister of Transport, Denis Lebel, for reconfirming his commitment to “introduce a bill which would give shippers the right to service agreements with the railways and provide a process to establish such an agreement should commercial negotiations fail.”

Amtrak names new chief information officer

Amtrak on Monday announced Jason D. Molfetas is the company’s new chief information officer (CIO), effective immediately. Molfetas will report directly to Amtrak President and CEO Joseph Boardman.
