Siemens to refurbish LRVs for Sacramento

The Sacramento Regional Transit District announced Wednesday that it has awarded a contract to Siemens Rail Systems to modify and refurbish 21 light rail vehicles that it acquired from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority in 2003 and that have since been in storage. The cars were originally built by Urban Transportation Development Corp. (UTDC) and went into operation in 1987.

BNSF picks RailComm for New Mexico yard

Fairport, N.Y.-based RailComm said Tuesday BNSF has added the company’s Blue Flag Indicator (BFI) System to its Belen Yard, N.M., facility.

Only two bids seen for MBTA rail contract

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) this year has sought bidders to operate its regional rail network, but according to the Boston Globe MBTA has received only two actual offers to bid, despite initial interest from 25 separate companies.

FreightCar America 2Q revenue, net income rise

FreightCar America, Inc. on Monday reported second-quarter revenue of $181.2 million and net income of $5.6 million, or 46 cents per diluted share, compared with revenue of $97.6 million and net income of $200,000, or two cents per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2011. Revenue was $219.1 million and net income was $9.7 million, or 81 cents per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2012.

Caltrain gets fed funds for modernization

Caltrain said Monday it will receive $3.2 million in federal Department of Transportation grant funds to install an advanced signal system needed to support modernized Caltrain service and the eventual addition of high speed rail, part of the Golden State’s “blended” approach to HSR.

Wabtec completes Brazilian acquisition

Wabtec Corp. said Monday it had completed its acquisition of Winco Equipamentos Ferroviarios Ltda., to expand its presence in Brazil. Wabtec expects the transaction to be accretive in the first year.

L. B Foster wins SMART concrete tie order

L.B. Foster Co. announced Thursday a contract to provide 89,175 of its CXTA Concrete Ties for the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) project. The CXT ties, equipped for Pandrol Fastclip rail fasteners, are to be installed on the new San Francisco Bay Area rail system connecting Sonoma County to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal in Marin County, north of San Francisco.

Miami Metrorail airport link set to open

Sunday’s official coming of Metrorail service to the Miami Intermodal Center will integrate Miami-Dade County’s rapid transit system with Miami International Airport.

STB keeps rate-case fees low

The Surface Transportation Board’s latest update of fees shippers must pay to file cases and pleadings, released Friday, contains some increases but leaves unchanged the current $350 fee charged shippers to file a rate complaint, as well as the current $150 fee to file an expedited small rate case. The board reduced both fees last year.

Fort Worth TEX Rail gets federal grant

Fort Worth Transportation Authority (“the T”) has been granted $4 million by the Federal Transit Administration to continue advancing TEX Rail, a 37-mile regional passenger rail service linking southwestern portions of Fort Worth, and the city’s downtown area, with Grapevine, Tex., and with Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
