U.S. intermodal powers on in latest week

U.S. freight carload volume for the week ending Oct. 6, 2012 notched another decline, down 6.3% from the comparable week in 2011, the Association of American Railroads reported Thursday. But U.S. intermodal continued its counterbalancing act, with volume up 3.8% during the week compared with a year ago.

Staten Island still seeks (HB)LRT

New York City’s “forgotten borough,” Staten Island, appears not to have forgotten or abandoned its desire to extend Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit (HBLRT) across the New Jersey-New York border and into the borough itself.

L.B. Foster rebrands subsidiaries

L.B. Foster Co. announced Wednesday it is “changing the names of several of its subsidiary companies acquired from Portec Rail Products, Inc. to L.B. Foster Rail Technologies to more accurately brand the innovative unit and better represent its rail product development capabilities.”

Amtrak (again) sets ridership record

Another year, another ridership record: Amtrak Wednesday released its fiscal year 2012 ridership results (ending Sept. 30), 31.2 million passengers, up 3.5% from FY11 and the ninth ridership record in the past 10 years.

Harsco Rail group lands international orders

Camp Hill, Pa.-based Harsco Corp. Wednesday said it has secured “three new international orders within its Harsco Rail group totaling more than $85 million in projected revenues and further adding to the group’s multi-year production backlog.”

First St. Paul LRV makes ceremonial debut

The first light rail vehicle for St. Paul, Minn.’s Central Corridor, now also dubbed the Green Line, made its debut Wednesday—in neighboring Minneapolis, at Target Field Station on the existing Hiawatha LRT line.

STV acquires ARCHITECTURE/vbn

New York-based STV, Inc. announced Tuesday it has acquired ARCHITECTURE/vbn (VBN), an award-winning architectural design firm based in Oakland, Calif. VBN will be integrated into STV’s West Coast operations.
