February freeze: U.S. freight traffic remains mixed
U.S. freight traffic volumes wrapped up 2013’s first month, and entered its second, on par with a path carved out for more than a year: mixed. U.S. intermodal traffic volume rose a healthy 7.2% during the week ending Feb. 2, measured against the comparable week in 2012, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday. But U.S. carload freight volume fell 3.4% short of last year’s levels.
Cincinnati, Duke Energy reach streetcar accord
Cincinnati officials Friday said they have signed two agreements with Duke Energy Corp. resolving a conflict generated by the city’s initial streetcar line, now under construction.

Colombia eyes major new coal railroad
New Colombia Resources, Inc. announced in Coral Springs, Fla., Thursday its plans for a public-private partnership with the Agencia Nacional de Infraestructura (ANI) of Colombia to build a $359 million railroad to move high-quality metallurgical coal from central Colombia to export terminals on the northern coast.
More mixed U.S. freight traffic, AAR reports
U.S. intermodal volume continues to shine as 2013 establishes itself, up 1.6% for the week ending Jan. 26, 2013, measured against the comparable week in 2012, according to the Association of American Railroads. AAR on Thursday noted that offset the ongoing lackluster performance in U.S. freight carload volume, down 6.3% for the week compared with a year ago.
Vermont governor seeks more Amtrak service
Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin has advanced a fiscal year 2014 state budget with funding for restored passenger rail service between Rutland and Burlington, running north-south on the Green Mountain State’s western flank.
