R.J. Corman to Launch RFCC

With the purchase of a 43-mile railroad branch and the leasing of a 20-mile branch from Norfolk Southern (NS), R.J. Corman Railroad Company is launching the Raleigh and Fayetteville Railroad, LLC (RFCC), its 19th short line.

Wabtec, National Labs Collaborate on Carbon Reduction

To “identify solutions for applying hydrogen in the rail industry,” Wabtec has entered into collaborative research and development agreements (CRADA) with Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories, the company announced Nov. 10.

Voters in two Massachusetts cities, New Bedford and Fall River, have voted to join the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in allowing the agency to move forward with its South Coast Rail project. Also, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA) opens new Muni metro station in the heart of Union Square and announces that it will switch over to a new, upgraded software system.

Port of Long Beach Releases Pier B Relocation Plan

The Port of Long Beach (POLB) on Nov. 10 released its relocation plan for the proposed Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility project, which will reconfigure, expand and enhance the existing rail yard and directly connect to on-dock rail facilities and the Alameda Corridor railway.

CN Sets ‘High-Water Mark’ for Gulf Export Program

CN has set a new high-water mark for its direct rail program to the Gulf, exceeding the previous near-term high recorded in 2014, the Class I announced on Nov. 9.

RAC Releases Locomotive Emissions Monitoring Report

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) on Nov. 3 released its Locomotive Emissions Monitoring (LEM) report, which found that “pioneering investments by Canadian railways in fleet renewal, fuel-saving technologies, employee training and low-carbon fuels are driving emissions reductions in the rail sector.”

Transport Canada to Invest C$5MM in New Transload Facility

The government of Canada will invest nearly C$5 million in funding under the National Trade Corridors National Trade Corridors Fund for the Building Capacity in Canada’s Steel Supply Chain project, Transport Canada announced on Nov. 9. The approximately $10 million project, which will be undertaken by the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA), will “relieve supply chain congestion at the Port of Hamilton.”

Sound Transit will replace pictograms with a new station code system across its Link network.
