AIHA Announces Free Resources to Protect Rail Worker Health, Safety

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the association for scientists and professionals “committed to preserving and ensuring occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) in the workplace and community,” announced Nov. 8 the availability of free resources to support rail operators in reducing health risks associated with work conducted on railroads.

U.S. GAO: Effect of PSR on Rail Safety ‘Unclear’

According to a recent study released by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), implementation of precision-scheduled railroading (PSR), a strategy to increase efficiency and reduce costs among Class I railroads, resulted in reductions in staff and assets, such as locomotives, and longer trains, but its effect on rail safety remained “inconclusive.”

RAC Issues 2022 Rail Trends Report

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) has published the 30th edition of its Rail Trends report, providing a ten-year performance overview (2012-2021) of its member passenger and freight railroads.

NCTD Secures $7MM for Sprinter Improvements

The North County Transit District (NCTD) on Dec. 23 announced the appropriation of $7 million in Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Community Project Funding for its Sprinter Corridor Service Improvement Project.

The PANYNJ moved 723,069 TEUs in November 2022, an increase of 20.6% compared to November 2019.

USDOT: $27.5MM to Upgrade Indiana’s South Shore Line

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) on Dec. 22 announced that its Build America Bureau (Bureau) has provided a $27.5 million Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) loan for a portion of the $649 million Double Track Project along a 26.6-mile segment of the South Shore Line between Gary and Michigan City, Ind.

House, Senate Approve FY23 THUD Bill

House and Senate Appropriations Committee leaders on Dec. 23 approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Transportation and Housing and Urban Development (THUD) funding bill of $21.2 billion for public transit and $16.6 billion for passenger and freight rail, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) announced.

The portion of HART's Honolulu Rail Transit Project that runs from East Kapolei Station to the Halawa/Aloha Stadium Station is expected to be completed by early 2023.
