BNSF Announces $3.92B Capital Investment Plan

BNSF Railway (BNSF) on Jan. 24 announced its 2024 capital investment plan of $3.92 billion, which the Class I says will “play a key role in its ability to operate a safe and reliable network while supporting the anticipated needs of its customers.”

AAR: North American Rail Volume Down Through Week Three

Through the first three weeks of 2024 (ending Jan. 20), total North American carload and intermodal traffic dipped 5.6% from the same point last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported Jan. 24. The U.S. and Canada experienced declines, while Mexico saw a gain.

BLET Ratifies CSXT-Springfield Terminal Implementing Agreement

A majority of members from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) Divisions 72 and 191 on Jan. 15 ratified an implementing agreement regarding CSX Transportation’s acquisition of the Springfield Terminal Railway (a Pan Am Railway affiliate).

More Than 8.5 Million Railcars Scanned With Duos RIP® Technology in 2023

Duos Technology Group, Inc. (Duos) announced Jan. 23 that the company’s Railcar Inspection Portal (RIP®) technology in 2023 performed more than eight and a half million comprehensive railcar scans, on more than 665,000 unique railcars.

"We continued to optimize our fleet by selectively selling railcars in the secondary market, generating over $30 million of remarketing income in the quarter,” said GATX President and CEO Robert C. Lyons.

GATX 4Q23: ‘Excellent Financial Results’

Chicago-based GATX Corp. has reported fourth-quarter 2023 net income of $66.0 million, or $1.81 per diluted share, compared with fourth-quarter 2022’s $48.4 million, or $1.36 per diluted share. For full-year 2023, net income was $259.2 million, or $7.12 per diluted share, versus the prior year’s $155.9 million, or $4.35 per diluted share.

FECR Unveils New Locomotive Paint Scheme

Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) recently unveiled at its Smyrna Beach, Fla., shop a new locomotive paint scheme, as well as its FEC-430 to commemorate the railroad’s veterans.
