AAR: Carloads Down, Intermodal Up in Week 23

U.S. rail traffic for the week ending June 8, 2024 (Week 23) was up 4.1% from the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported June 12.

MBTA Board Approves FY25-29 Capital Investment Plan

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Board of Directors on June 11 unanimously approved the Fiscal Years 2025-2029 Capital Investment Plan (FY25-29 MBTA CIP), which includes more than 650 unique capital projects to “modernize, expand and increase the safety and reliability” of the MBTA transit network with a programmed spend of $9.6 billion over the next five fiscal years, including $843 million in new funding.

Transit Briefs: OC Transpo, UTA, Detroit People Mover/TTC, Caltrain

OC Transpo provides a progress update on all three O-Train extensions and an overview of efforts under way to improve the service reliability of O-Train Line 1. Also, the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) plans to extend FrontRunner train service to Payson; the Detroit People Mover will receive new railcars from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC); and Caltrain runs eight trains simultaneously on its newly completed corridor.

RailState: ‘Container Volumes Drop on CPKC; Volumes on CN Continue Historic Levels’

Total container volume through the western Canada ports was 94,791 containers in May, down slightly from April’s nearly 97,000 containers, according to real-time network visibility provider RailState, which independently tracks all freight rail movements across Canada. April’s totals were the highest ever recorded by RailState, which was established in 2021. The declines all came on CPKC, which moved 15.3% less container volume than in April, and was down 2.9% from May 2023.
