NS, SMART-TD Launch New Initiatives Aimed at Conductor Training

Norfolk Southern (NS) and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers—Transportation Division (SMART-TD) announced July 26 that they are partnering to launch several new initiatives to “further enhance the training program for conductor trainees and increase compensation for conductors who helped provide this important training.”

Rodriguez takes over from Omar Alghabra, who has served as Transport Minister since 2021.

AAR: North American Rail Volume Down Through 29 Weeks

For the first 29 weeks of 2023 (ending July 22), total U.S. weekly rail traffic dipped 4.2% from the same point last year, according to the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) July 26 report. Both Canada and the U.S. saw declines, while Mexico saw an increase.
