FRA Issues Safety Bulletin on Close Clearances Following Conductor Trainee Fatality

Following the Aug. 6 fatality of a conductor trainee during a yard shoving move, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has released a new Safety Bulletin to “encourage railroads to identify locations where clearance specific safety issues could occur.”

AAR: North American Rail Volume Down Through Week 33

For the first 33 weeks of 2023 (ending Aug. 19), total U.S. weekly rail traffic dipped 4.9% from the same point last year, according to the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) Aug. 23 report. Both Canada and the U.S. saw declines, while Mexico saw an increase.

Port of Coos Bay Submits Mega Grant Proposal to Support Oregon Intermodal Project

NTSB: Brakes on Trolley Involved in SEPTA Derailment Disabled to Allow for Repairs  

A preliminary report on the derailment of a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) trolley issued on Aug. 21 by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has revealed that the brakes on trolley 9107, which, on July 27, derailed and struck an SUV and a restaurant, had been disabled on the day of the accident to allow for air compressor replacement.

Amtrak Orders 10 Additional Airo™ Trainsets

Amtrak announced Aug. 21 that it has executed a contract to order 10 additional Airo™ trainsets “as demand for passenger rail travel exceeds expectations,” bringing the total contract order to 83.
