USDOT Launches New Multimodal Freight Office

As part of the inaugural meeting of the White House Council on Supply Chain Resilience, President Biden and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on Nov. 27 announced the launch of the Office of Modal Freight Infrastructure and Police (Multimodal Freight Office) to “oversee the maintenance and improvement of the nation’s freight network and supply chains.”

Thomas Joins Viance as Industrial Sales Manager

Viance, a Charlotte, N.C.-based provider of wood treatment technologies and services, announced Nov. 28 that it has hired Jeff Thomas as Industrial Sales Manager. He will be responsible for customer relations to service growing market demand for the company’s line of DCOI preservative products.

AAR: North American Rail Volume Down Through 46 Weeks

Through the first 46 weeks of 2023 (ending Nov. 18), total North American carload and intermodal traffic decreased 3.1% from the same point last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported Nov. 22. Both the U.S. and Canada experienced declines, while Mexico saw a gain.

Public, Private Sector Infrastructure Executives Sign EIP Pledge

Fourteen public and private sector infrastructure executives on Nov. 20 signed the Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP) Pledge. The signing took place at Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) LA Infrastructure Forum, which also included the launch of EIP’s California Plan initiative.
