AAR: North American Rail Volume Up Through Week 19

Through the first 19 weeks of 2024 (ending May 11), total North American carload and intermodal traffic rose 2.0% from the same point last year, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported May 8. The U.S., Canada and Mexico all experienced gains.

2023: A ‘Strong’ Year for VIA Rail

In 2023, 4.1 million passengers rode VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) trains, an increase of 815,000, or 24.7%, compared to 2022, marking the agency’s highest ridership since 2019, VIA Rail reported on May 14.

Transit Briefs: MBTA, SMART

The Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) secures a contract that raises wages for its Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter rail workers in Boston. Also, Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) releases its Fiscal Year 2024 budget.

Metrolink proposes a new rail service from Moorpark to Goleta in Santa Barbara’s South County. Also, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) looks at adding a new “Copper Line” to its Trolley system.
