Baker to Congress: Don’t be short-sighted about short lines

When last we heard from American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) President Chuck Baker, he was testifying before the Senate Commerce Committee, Subcommittee on Transportation and Safety on the role Class II and III railroads play in supporting intermodal connections across the U.S. surface transportation network. He also urged support for the Short Line 45-G Tax Credit.

SLSI hires Davies-Schrils as Director, Research and Organizational Development

The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) announced on March 29 that it has hired Dr. Kim Davies-Schrils as Director, Research and Organizational Development. She will be responsible for providing design, development, oversight and analysis of key programs, and also primary research and scientific and technical reports based on program outputs.

FTA offering $4MM to combat human trafficking

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) on March 29 launched a new Human Trafficking Awareness and Public Safety Initiative, which includes two Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) totaling $4 million to prevent human trafficking and other crimes that may occur on buses, trains and other modes of public transportation.

Kansas City Southern confirmed on March 21 that the Investigation Authority of the Mexican Federal Competition Commission (COFECE) published an excerpt of its preliminary report about its assessment of effective competition in the market of freight railway transportation services “regarding certain chemical and petrochemical products shipped in certain specific routes with an origin or destination in the southern region of the State of Veracruz.”

Greenbrier receives $450MM in orders, previews FY2Q financials

The Greenbrier Companies announced March 22 that it had received orders for 3,800 new railcars with an aggregate value of nearly $450 million during its fiscal second quarter ended Feb. 28. At the same time, the company announced preliminary financial results for its fiscal second quarter.
