Manager, Railcar Technical Services – CAI

Job Title:  Manager, Railcar Technical Services
Department:  Rail

Location: USA - Employee would be based in a USA location suitable for performing the job requirements including travel to inspect cars, repair facilities and to meet with customers.  Our headquarters office is in San Francisco, CA.

Exempt/ Non Exempt: Exempt

Function:   Manage all maintenance and technical aspects of the rail fleet including inspections, procurement of cars and materials, cost controls, specification review, modification program, quality and the optimization of rail fleet utilization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage the maintenance, inspection and repair of railcars including oversight of rail management service providers, repair and inspection vendors.
  • Develop processes and procedures to manage railcar technical services.
  • Determine repair authorization thresholds for management vendors.
  • Review damage estimate details above established thresholds and make repair approval determination based upon appropriateness and cost of repairs.
  • Review monthly damage maintenance costs and propose and implement methods to reduce costs and maximize utilization.
  • Manage the maintenance and inspection budget.
  • Interface with customers in conjunction with sales personnel to provide technical support.
  • Review car modification plans, propose improvements and manage the modification process.
  • Coordinate the acquisition and inspection of new cars.
  • Negotiate the purchase of materials and manage the materials inventory.
  • Perform field inspections and provide guidance on condition of equipment, cost to correct issues and potential problems with proposed acquisitions.
  • Remain up to date on current AAR rules and proposed changes and alerts. Ensure rail car fleet is in compliance.
  • Evaluate and provide recommendations of shop operations and repair facilities.
  • Coordinate end of lease car return.
  • Negotiate agreements subject to review of management.
  • Provide timely status reports to CAI management.
  • Optimize use of computer technology to improve efficiency of rail operations and reporting.
  • Frequent travel to inspect cars and meet with customers as directed by manager.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten years of relevant rail industry experience with in-depth technical knowledge of railcar construction and repair methodology.
  • In depth knowledge of FRA and AAR rules and regulations with regard to car construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Strong negotiating skills.
  • Physical ability to travel and to inspect maintenance facilities and railcars.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in use of computer technology, internet and Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel).
