General Summary:

The successful candidate for this position will join the organization as a key engineering associate supporting the system activities of the Engineering Department. Responsibilities include support of various engineering tasks such as developing and maintaining project schedules, monitoring project compliance related to scope, schedule and budget, developing sight plans for new customers, assisting with special projects related to growth, and development contract specifications and bid documents.  The position has a significant role in contributing to and promoting the safe and efficient operation of the engineering department and of OmniTRAX.

Essential Job Duties, other duties may be assigned:

  • The idea candidate will be competent in the use of the following computer programs, AutoCad, AutoCad Lite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Project. 
  • The ability to read and understand engineering drawings and right-of-way maps is essential. Surveying skills are a plus.
  • Able to read and understand FRA and company rules, specifications and guidelines. Able to legibly document items of non-compliance.
  • Prepare project cost estimates, operating and capital budgets, development of AFE’s, monitoring of AFE’s in progress.
  • Develop drawings, plans, and exhibits as necessary to determine land use opportunity.

Education/Experience:

A high school diploma or general education development certificate (GED) is required. Candidates should be highly functional in Microsoft Office software and in the use of Microsoft project.  The ability to develop site plans in AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD lite is essential. 

A Bachelors of Science in Engineering is preferred with 2 to 5 years job-related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Ideal candidate will be a Registered Professional Engineer
  • Valid State Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics and construction plans.
  • Demonstrate an attention to detail and coordinate various activities simultaneously.
  • Ability to comply with instructions furnished in written, oral and schedule form.
  • Ability to read and comprehend published rules, procedure and manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors and business associates in a clear, concise, courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (in English) verbally and in written form. 

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The position is primarily centered in an office environment. In field activity is a routine part of this position duties which at times will exposed the individual to on track equipment, loud noise, moving mechanical parts, diesel fumes, grease and oil smells; weather elements, and other conditions common to an operating railroad environment.

Must be able to wear safety equipment and be capable of walking up steep inclines and uneven surfaces.

Field work and the related travel associated with this position is estimate at 20%.
