NJ Transit to offer Giants Stadium rail link for large events
Written by Douglas John Bowen New Jersey Transit Wednesday said it will debut rail service between Hoboken Terminaland Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., via Secaucus Junction, beginningSunday, July 26, when the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final title soccer match isscheduled.
A “J-hook” spur off NJT’s Pascack Valley Line, underconstruction for the past two years, will allow rail access to the MeadowlandsSports Complex, though NJT will restrict initial rail operations to eventsanticipating 50,000 fans or more.NJT will provide bus service from Secaucus Junction, served by nearly all NJTrail lines, for smaller events.
Trains will operate between Hoboken Terminal and the MeadowlandsSports Complex stations approximately every 10 to 20 minutes, beginning 3 1/2hours before and up to two hours after events. The July 26 debut could allowNJT to iron out glitches in the service prior to September, when service willbe provided for home games by boththe NFL’s Giants and Jets.
The new service also is expected to dovetail with plans tooffer connecting rail service to and from a planned tristate rail servicelinking New Haven, Conn., and Secaucus Junction, west of Manhattan, on theNortheast Corridor beginning in the fall of 2010. Metro-North train crews will operate the equipment from New Haven to New York Penn Station, while NJ Transit counterparts will handle the segments between Penn Station and Secaucus.
