Train Dispatcher – Louisville & Indiana Railroad

Location: Jeffersonville, Indiana

Summary of Position: This position is responsible to provide the safe and efficient movement of trains and equipment over the dispatching district, in accordance with Louisville and Indiana Railroad’s operating and safety rules, policies and practices.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

  • Thoroughly understands and strongly supports compliance with FRA, TSA, CG and other applicable government regulations as well as Company operating rules and safety rules.
  • Notify Chief Train Dispatcher or other designated manager(s) of all incidents including damage to cars and lading, defective equipment and incidents involving railroad employees or third parties.
  • Direct and coordinate the movement of trains according to established operating plans and to meet customer needs.
  • Plan for the safe and efficient movement of train and equipment traffic that also supports effective utilization of Maintenance of Way forces and equipment.
  • Issue Track Warrants via radio and telephone, and monitor all rail movements.
  • Accurately complete required documentation including train sheet and record of unusual events.
  • Know the railroad territory and keep informed of changes in physical characteristics.
  • Update and maintain car location inventory using standard industry software (RMI).
  • Develop and maintain reports for the operating department and senior management.
  • Communicate with company and contract personnel regarding weather or other conditions which may affect train movement or employee safety.
  • Report any alleged or actual violation of operating and safety rules and unsafe conditions
  • Ensure that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
  • Stay informed of applicable developments and practices in the railroad industry.
  • Support security related initiatives.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED High School graduate or equivalent
  • College or technical school training highly desirable
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Accurately type 25 average net words per minute
  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Internet) required
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to sustain concentration on processing multiple information inputs for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to prioritize, manage and perform multiple tasks in a fast paced and sometimes stressful environment
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written communications)
  • Ability to communicate clearly by radio and telephone
  • Must pass background check
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Required to pass company and regulatory certification requirements and periodic examinations and performance metrics. 
  • Subject to both Company and Federal drug and alcohol programs, which include periodic random and incident-related drug and/or alcohol testing in accordance with applicable regulations (note that use of some controlled substances that are legal under certain state laws are prohibited under Company procedures and federal law
  • Must be able to successfully pass operating rules examinations and tests on train dispatcher rules
  • Available to work a 40 hour week subject to overtime, on-call and alternate shifts that may include nights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Train dispatching experience (Track Warrant Control)
  • Experience as an air traffic controller, railroad tower operator, of similar dispatching function
