EMD wins new order from Mauritania

Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefElectro-Motive Diesel,Inc., announced Oct. 20 that it has has signed a contract to supply six SD70ACSheavy-haul AC diesel-electric locomotives to a mining railway in Mauritania,Societe Nationale Industrielle et Miniere. (SNIM). This will bring the number of EMD locomotives operating inMauritania to 44.
EMD said the units will bespecifically designed for SNIM’s operation, hauling minerals in some of theworld’s harshest desert environments. Delivery is scheduled to begin during thefourth quarter of 2011.
The SD70ACS is a 4,500 BHPAC locomotive that includes an EMD IGBT AC drive system. This locomotive alsofeatures a pulse filtration system and movable sand plows on the pilot andtrucks, making it an ideal locomotive for the extreme environment of the Mauritaniandesert.
