NJ casino train run suspended until May

Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

New York-Atlantic City train service funded in large measure by three Atlantic City, N.J., casino properties will be suspended between Jan. 14 and May 13, reportedly due to low ridership.

The train, in operation since February 2009, is operated by New Jersey Transit and uses upgraded Bombardier multilevel equipment. Launched during the depth of the recent economic recession, the service has failed to garner the expected weekend ridership.

New Jersey’s Casino Reinvestment Development Authority contributed $2 million into the service during the first year to help cover an anticipated $5.9 million revenue shortfall. But CRDA says it will provide no more money to the train.

Standard NJ Transit service linking Atlantic City and 30th Street Station in Philadelphia is not affected by the suspension.
