RailAmerica carloads up 4% in December
Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefRailAmerica, Inc., which operates 40 short line and regional railroad in the U.S. and Canada, reported Wednesday that its total freight carloads for December were 71,209, up 4.0% from 68,445 in December 2009.
December shipments increased in nine out of 12 commodity groups compared with December 2009. Shipments of coal, metallic ores and metals, and non-metallic minerals and products were especially strong. The largest declines were in agricultural products and motor vehicles.
RailAmerica companies operate approximately 7,300 miles of track in 27 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.
