Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefThe Port of Los Angeles, which is directly served by Union Pacific and BNSF Railway via a shared rail corridor, announced Thursday that container traffic increased 16% at the port in 2010 compared with 2009. Exports surged 10.3% to a record 1,841,274 TEUs and exceeded the previous record of 1,782,502 TEUs in 2008. Imports rose 12.8% in 2010 to 1,973,933 TEUs.
“The 2010 volume gains far surpass our initial estimates, and we’ve been able to facilitate some export opportunities in the past year through our TradeConnect initiative and increased networking with local business stakeholders,” said Port Executive Director Geraldine Knatz.
“The Port of Los Angeles is putting people back to work and doing its part to help President Obama meet his goal to double national exports over the next five years,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
The Port of Los Angeles is the leading seaport in North America in shipping container volume and cargo value.
